Today (April 22nd), we commemorate Earth Day. Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. This year’s theme is “Climate Action”.

A proverb rightly says, “Treat the earth well, it was not given to you by your parents, it was loaned to you by your children.”

In this article, we share ten simple but impactful ways that protecting our planet can start with you. We hope you are inspired to make a choice daily for a healthier planet.

  • Reduce, reuse, and recycle.

Cut down on what you throw away. Follow the three “R’s” to conserve natural resources and land.

  • Volunteer.

Volunteer for cleanups in your community. You can get involved in protecting our waterways, too.

  •  Educate.

Help others to understand the importance and value of our natural resources, and of protecting them. You can share articles and ideas on social media platforms, blogs, etc.

  • Conserve water.

The less water you use, the less runoff and wastewater that eventually end up in the ocean. For farming or gardening, use healthy rations of water to conserve water and also prevent the crops from decaying.

  • Shop wisely.

Buy local products, where possible. This does not only help the economy, but it also saves all the pollution incurred by transporting goods over long distances.

Also, buy less plastic and bring a reusable shopping bag.

  • Turn Off Lights When You’re Not in The Room

Use energy-efficient (energy-saver) light bulbs that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

You don’t need to light up a room no one is using. Save energy and money by getting into the habit of switching off the lights when you leave the room. For standard bulbs, do this each time you leave. For energy savers, do this if you are leaving the room for more than fifteen minutes.

You will also keep your rooms cooler, as lights can make your rooms hotter!

  • Garden Manually

Grow plants in your home. Plants provide food and oxygen. They help save energy, clean the air, and help combat climate change. Try to avoid using a hosepipe – use a watering can instead so you can concentrate on the areas that really need watering. Try to water first thing before the sun is up to reduce water wasted to evaporation. Rake old clippings by hand, or leave them to fertilise your soil. Use vinegar on weeds instead of harsh weed killers.

  •  Plant Your Own Tree

There are multiple benefits to planting a tree in your garden. It is good for the environment both the land and the air, it can shade your home and cut back your air con usage and it can even increase the value of your property. You could make it an annual event where each family member plants a new tree.

  •  Don’t Throw It Away

You know the old saying, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure?: Well, it is often true. Don’t throw away perfectly good things just because you’re sick of them, or no longer have use for them. Instead, convert them for another use for instance, you can use old plastic containers to grow plants or use old newspapers to wrap gifts.
